Each year we recruit casual exam workers to support with the delivery of in-person examinations at the University.
Exam workers play a vital role in ensuring the seamless delivery of our examinations. We therefore welcome applications from individuals who excel in communication, have strong interpersonal skills, are detail-oriented, remain calm under pressure, and thrive in team settings.
All exam workers receive comprehensive training, a detailed information handbook, and full support from the Exam Office throughout.
About Examinations at Cambridge
The University of Cambridge conducts examinations year-round from September, with the majority running during the main exam period from mid-April to mid-June following Easter. We deliver both written and digital in-person examinations, including those for students with Reasonable Adjustments, such as additional writing time and/or rest breaks. Exams are held at various locations across the University, primarily in central Cambridge, the Sidgwick site, and the West Cambridge site.
In the 2025-2026 academic year we administered 3,675 exam papers and 70,349 candidatures across 46 exam venues.
We currently recruit exam workers to support two distinct groups of students: Main Cohort students and students with Reasonable Adjustments.
- Main Cohort students sit their examinations alongside their peers in their subject of study, typically in larger examination venues or halls. Examination staff in these venues are responsible for the standard delivery and invigilation of digital and written exams in accordance with examination regulations.
- Students with Reasonable Adjustments are students who have been approved for additional support to ensure they can access their examinations and demonstrate their knowledge and skills fairly. Adjustments may include extra time, supervised rest breaks, use of a smaller venue, noise-cancelling headphones, or other approved arrangements. The Reasonable Adjustments exam venues manage both written and online digital exams and often undertake a mix of different subjects and exam papers at the same time.

For all roles except Digital Exam Technicians, we have two separate pools of workers, one for Reasonable Adjustment examinations and one for Main Cohort examinations. Please ensure you are familiar with the differences in responsibility as you will be asked for your preference as part of the application form.
Digital Exam Technicians will receive invitations to both Main Cohort and Reasonable Adjustment exams. The duties remain the same in each venue except the duration of each session may differ.
